How did soliders tell who's on their side and who's against?

by v_okenka

So, few days ago I saw a film 'The King' and the battle gave me a thought. How did soliders tell who's on their side and who are they fighting against in the actual war/fight? I know some had like different emblems on shields, or maybe different armor. But when it was some smaller battle or something? Or did they legit just killed everything that moves?

Thanks for the answer!

What could be better than an answer straight from the horse's mouth? His Majesty u/Henry_V_Rex has deigned to offer the contemporary view of the matter in this thread, addressing that film specifically.

This also happens to be covered by the VFAQ, specifically this answer by u/vonstroheims_monocle, with additional links further down that thread - though caution should be exercised, as the ones linked are older answers from the dark days of pre-2014.

The historical accuracy of 'The King' has already be addressed in the best possible manner by The King in question himself. If you have further questions, feel free to ask.
