What did my Granddad do in WW2?

by QuintofGaunt

I was talking about my grandfather with my dad lately and he told me his dad got the EKII in WW2. But he is not sure for what action he got it. He thinks for shooting down some tanks with the panzerfaust. For context my granddad was drafted into the 10th SS Panzerdivision "Frundsberg" in the second half of 1944. He was 18 years old. Apparently he never talked much about his experiences in war. So what did a average german soldier have to do to get the EKII? Is the "he shot down some tanks" realistic?

Edit: He served as a Panzergrenadier. He wasnt operating any tank.
