What did Medieval Europe call the Byzantines?

Today, we refer to the Eastern Roman Empire that survived in Constantinople until 1453 as the Byzantine Empire. However, we know that this is a term created after they had gone, and they referred to themselves as Roman, and the Roman Empire. But what did the rest of Europe call them? Especially in light of the Holy Roman Empire, and the disagreements the Pope in Rome had with the Byzantine Empire, what name did they have for the Greek, Orthodox state?
