I’m genuinely curious about this whole thing. I’ve heard people say academia is basically dead and I’ve read the famous post on here about not getting a graduate degree of any kind in history because there are no jobs. I don’t see as much about consulting work though. How hard is it to get a job as a consultant, how much experience would one need, how much schooling, and is film consulting an option? I never hear that talked about at all really and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of info on how one would work in that field. I assume you would need film connections?
Consulting for films, documentaries, tv, etc would require the consultant to be preeminently recognized in their field of study - teaching and/or a published scholar. Almost every academic out there would take a side hustle to consultant, but I haven’t heard of too many historians who can make a full time living from just consulting. The one niche market is military travel guides who can make a living doing field tours.
