I was taught at school that the way the settlement of the Americas happened was that humans crossed from Asia to North America via the Beringia land bridge through an ice-free corridor.

However, last week I read in the wikipedia article that it is possible that the ice-free corridor didn't open early enough to account for some settlements in South America like Monte Verde which are dated earlier than that.

What is the currently most accepted hypothesis in the field to explain this?
