My grandpa and my Great GrandFather were both in the Indian Military. We recently came across some medals. Im assuming my great grandpa was under the British Raj. Would love to hear the history behind them. I have added a link to the medals below!
Hello there! As your question is related to looking for identification/information regarding military personnel, our Guide on Military Identification may be of use to you. It provides a number of different resources, including how to request service records from a number of national agencies around the world, as well as graphical aids to assist in deciphering rank, unit, and other forms of badges or insignia. While the users here may still be able to lend you more assistance, hopefully this will provide a good place to start!
These medals are easy to identify:
The one with the rainbow ribbon is the Inter-Allied Victory Medal, which is a campaign medal that was given, in the case of the British Empire forces to those who had also received the British War Medal, or the
1914-1915 Star, given to those who had served in any theatre of war against the Central Powers between August 1914 and December 1915.
The medal with the Iraq Clasp is the General Service Medal (1918), indicating the recipient had served in Ramadi between 1919 and 1920, or had been part of an establishment in Iraq in the second half of 1920.
