Why did Hitler and the NSDAP decide to engage in electoral politics rather than operate as a purely revolutionary organisation?

It's worth noting that they did attempt to sieze power as a revolutionary force in 1923. This was not successful, and it led to hitler being sentenced to prison for light treason, for 5 years although he ultimately served less than a year, and it was there he wrote mein kampf. Due to this failure, he opted to take control via more legitimate means. It's also worth noting that the coup attempt was launched in conjunction with general ludendorff, whose support he lost after the failure of the coup, due to the fact hitler fled ( which he considered cowardly)
