I have seen mentioned a lot here that spears and axes where much more common infantry weapons than swords. As I understand it, they were mostly backup and self defense weapons (somewhat like pistols now). So that leaves me wondering, wouldn't most "special" weapons be spears since in the minds of the people at the time, that was a more sensible and useful weapon in battle?
