Why are European medieval illustrations so primitive looking?

by bacchus_et_samsara

It's not like the art of good illustration was invented during the Renaissance or something. I have seen, for example, Roman wall paintings that are well executed. Yet, in European sources, such as Bibles or martial treaties, the illustrations are almost child like; flat, weird perspectives, the most ridiculous expressions on people being cut to pieces and so on. Why is it that?
