How did the US go from hating everything military like in Vietnam to today’s so called “hero worship” towards the military?

THIS IS NOT POLITICAL IN ANYWAY. I’m just curious how the mind set in America changed so much from anti war spitting on service members to mass discounts at any chain store for service members. What has the US civilians mind set to the military been like throughout history?

Heya--this is probably a better question for /r/AskSocialScience. Not all, but A LOT of it is post-9/11.

Good luck!
