How many people fought in the French Revolution ?

What percentage of the public was actually in favour of the revolution and how many actually took up arms?

The French Revolution is one of the most complex topics in history. Honestly, the more I read about it the less I feel like I understand it.

That being said the first part of your question is too long for a reasonable answer. The French Revolution was not one unified movement through its existence. There were several stages with multiple ideologies fighting for power. I think it is safe to say that outside of the die-hard monarchists who existed in the early days of the Revolution the majority of the population supported it. All three estates (1st estate- the clergy 2nd- the nobility 3rd- everyone else 90% of the population) were unified in the belief that something needed to be changed. Now, they weren't all unified in what those changes would look like. However, when the National Assembly began to go after the Church the movement became divided. You have many examples of whole regions rebelling against the Revolution. (Look up the Vendee) When King Louis XVI was executed many people began questioning the movement as well. The idea of executing a King even though they did not want him in power did not sit well with many people. Then of course when the Reign of Terror started around September of 1793 that's really when the Revolution ostracized the moderates.

So, in short, I would say the beginning of the Revolution was widely supported by the public. As it slowly devolved and became more radicalized it lost a lot of support.

The National Convention declared a Levee en masse on August 23rd, 1793. This essentially called upon the whole country to work towards the war movement. All unmarried able-bodied men were requisitioned into the military. Around September of 1794, the Army had reached a total of 1,500,000 men. However, the fighting force was only ever around 800,000 still quite a large number for an army during this time.

Hope this helped!
