Abraham Lincoln was considered moderate within the Republican Party of the day but he was certainly opposed to the institution of slavery. Lincoln strongly opposed the expansion of slavery to the western territories. Lincoln’s brief time in congress as a Whig was evidence of this.
Lincoln did not initially plan to abolish slavery when elected president but he did not support the institution and had the political fallout of abolition not existed, he would have abolished slavery, and he did in 1863.
Lincoln may not have planned to abolish the institution but he was strongly against it despite what some have claimed.
