The thing that stands out to me is that the author completely ignores any religions or cultures outside of the ancient Grecians, Romans or “pagans” during the time of Christ.
People in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia doted on their children, although they were not afraid to put them to work. Some of the wealthy children in particular come across as rather spoiled. I wrote about this in What did the life of a Sumerian or Akkadian child look like?
