I just read a piece about het mafia in italy around 1950 till 1980. Only i was wondering, how was het mafia for women? Were they able to join meetings and be involved? Did they have the same rules and initiation? and finally: has this changed over the years? How is the mafia now treating women and is there nowadays a diffence between men and women?

Not sure about other criminal organizations in Italy, but for the Sicilian La Cosa Nostra it is traditionally an all boys club; women were not allowed to join and thus there were no initiations for women, I believe this has been the case ever since the 1870's? There has been records of women being 'involved' with the mafia (one example would be Virginia Hill from the American mafia, 'the mistress of the mob'), but never as an official member.
