Alexei Nikolaevich Romanov's Diary and Writings

by EyeoftheHurricane

Has there ever been a publication of Tczarevich Alexei's diary and writings? I've found full publications of two of his sisters and mother's writings and some snippets from Alexei on Helen Azar's site, but I can't find a full publication of his writings, if it exists. In my free time in quarantine I've developed a fascination with the family and Alexei in particular as a tragic figure. I want to learn more about what they were like as people and what they were thinking at the time, but Alexei's personal writings mostly elude me. Were his diary and other writings destroyed like a couple of his sisters' were or does it exist somewhere and I just can't find it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

they haven’t been published in english yet other than excerpts here and there. i believe helen azar will be doing an alexei book after the anastasia one, which should be out sometime this year. at least one of his diaries exists, i’ve seen photos of his 1916 diary just recently, and i believe there are more. several of his letters to his mother and sisters from his time at army headquarters during the war still exist as well.

this is what i know of that’s been published in english

  • diaries and letters of olga, tatiana, and maria, translated by helen azar
  • in the footsteps of the romanovs, also by helen azar. there are at least a few of alexei’s writings in here i believe!
  • a lifelong passion by maylunas and mironenko focuses on letters between nicholas and alexandra, but it’s a must read if you’re interested in the romanovs. it’s very extensive and has their letters from the time of their engagement right up until the revolution. i can’t remember if there are any notes from alexei in it, but his parents talk about him in their letters to each other constantly.

feel free to dm me if you have any more questions or need more information/recs, always happy to talk about this stuff!
