I constantly forget that Florida was part of the Confederacy and every time I read about the Civil War, I feel like I almost never see Florida mentioned. What part did they play? Were there any significant battles there or was Florida largely untouched by war?
There is one battle that I am aware of. Depending on which side you were on, it was either called Olustee or Ocean Pond. Union troops marched west from Jacksonville, along the railroad tracks, and met Confederate troops at Olustee. A pitched battle was fought, in the midst of a heavy pine forest and palmetto scrub. Union troops eventually withdrew, or retreated, back to Jacksonville.
Olustee is east of Lake City, and there's a park/monument at the site of the battle, on US-90.
