Art historian here! While I can't speak with absolute authority for the accuracy of the plot (which is dramaticized in the show) I can say that smaller details in the show are not always accurate and incredibly infuriating. The Medici family were great patrons of the arts and were arguably the driving force for the Renaissance, patronizing artists such as Donatello, Botticelli, and Bandinelli, which the show mentions well, and they have great fun showing off these famous works as "new" pieces by the artists in the show. The problem though, is that the show depicts these works as they look now, and not as they looked in 1400s. The best example of this is the famous bronze statue of Mercury in the Villa Medici, which is unveiled as a "new" creation in season one, completely weathered and tarnished black! The original statue by Giambologna was created in the 1580s and was shiny bronze, then was later moved to the entrance to the villa and became a fountainpiece in the 18th century. Now it's housed in the Bargello, and is tarnished black. The statue is a great symbol of the Medici house and the Renaissance movement, but the show valued more its recognition factor rather than focusing on historical accuracy
