Arabs and Jews have common ancestry, and that explains why they both believe in Abraham, and the prophets of the Old Testament, but how did Jesus enter into the picture? How did a new prophet who never left modern-day Israel / Palestine become so important to early Muslims?

Can you clarify your question? Arabs and Jews aren’t always mutually exclusive. One refers to an ethnicity, the other to a religion (generally speaking). Your comment about Muslims doesn’t quite make sense either: Jesus has always been important to Muslims. He’s in the Koran. Muslims just have a different interpretation of him than Christians.
