As a history major (University of Pittsburgh) with a concentration in U.S. History but a general interest in all historical study, what books should I definitely make sure I have read?

The Men Who Lost America by Andrew O'Shaughnessy. A well-researched book that profiles the British leadership during the time of the American Revolution, such as generals Howe, Clinton and Cornwallis and the political leadership on both sides of the Atlantic: Governor Guy Carleton of Quebec, Lord North the UK PM, Lord Germain, and of course, George III.

Far from a bumbling group of incompetents, these men were the cream of their respective professions at the outbreak of war, with extensive military and political experience. Even after the defeat at Yorktown, most would go on to distinguished careers. It's a fascinating and balanced read and gives some fresh perspectives on how British decisions in London and actions in America had cost them the war.
