I am looking for letters/mentions of the Church Fathers (preferably of Basil the Great) on ancient theatre (drama). More specifically, I want to adduce evidence in support of my claim that it was strictly forbidden for a member of the clergy to attend the theatre.
Do you have any recommendations?
One of the most outspoken theatre polemicists was Archbishop of Constantinople John Chrysostom (c. 347 - 407). Funny enough, without his vivid descriptions of theatre and theatrical activity and characterizations of those who sought to attend such spectacles, we would probably know very little about the continued theatrical practices of the Eastern Roman Empire in Late Antiquity. Leonardo Lugaresi has written an excellent analysis on Chrysostom and how his metaphorical, symbolic, and descriptive explanations of theatre are foundational to his Christian messages and his theological construction of the world.
