Jesus is a major figure in Islam, and is the most mentioned person in the Quran. How did the Christians who first encountered Muslims perceive Islam? Was it seen as another of the many heretical Christian sects, or a new religion entirely?

Very briefly, it was considered a form of paganism, or a heretical form of Christianity. The idea that there could even be another new religion did not really occur to ancient/medieval Christians.
