medieval count of Flanders/ belgium

by brammobo

HI everyone!

I am looking for books about the medieval history of the County of Flanders, but I can't really seem to find the right books (maybe I looked at the wrong places).

are there any books out there (preferably English, but Dutch is just fine) that will fulfill my reading needs?

Are there any specific time-periods you are interested in? Besides that, I recommend De Boergondiƫrs by Bart van Loo. In this book van Loo talks about the Burgundians primarily, but while doing so he goes over the history of Belgium and specifically Flanders in the high and late medieval period. This ofcourse because Belgium from this period and the Burgundians are inseperable. He talks about the economy of Flanders with wealthy towns like Brugge and Gent, and their importance during the 100 years war and after. I learned a lot from this book and it actually made me make a trip to Brugge to see all the landmarks for myself.

Hi there anyone interested in recommending things to OP! While you might have a title to share, this is still a thread on /r/AskHistorians, and we still want the replies here to be to an /r/AskHistorians standard - presumably OP would have asked at /r/history or /r/askreddit if they wanted non-specialist opinion. So give us some indication why the thing you're recommending is valuable, trustworthy, or applicable! Posts that provide no context for why you're recommending a particular podcast/book/novel/documentary/etc, and which aren't backed up by a historian-level knowledge on the accuracy and stance of the piece, will be removed.
