As the son of a factory owner who profited immensely from the wealth generated there I wonder if he ever attempted to improve practices and working conditions in those factories and if not, why?
There is always more to be said, but the Engels family did not own the Manchester factory that their son was sent to work in – they were investors in a business owned by Peter Ermen, who was unhappy with the new arrangement and, suspecting that Engels was a spy sent to investigate his running of the firm, did what he could to marginalise him. I discussed all this in more detail in an earlier response, here, and you might like to review that while waiting for fresh answers to your question.
