The original use of the term "Cold War" was in October of 1945. None other than writer George Orwell used the phrase in an essay entitled You and the Atomic Bomb in the British newspaper "Tribune". He later used the phrase in March of 1946 in an article in the weekly "Observer" newspaper.

Since it gained use so early, it's arguable that the "era of tension" has never really been called anything else.
