When our friends in Deal UK had died i helped the family to clean out the shed and found this old tatty Sailor hat from the famous ship HMS Amethyst.
It turned out that our friend Una had been engaded to a Sailor on the ship and was told he had been killed. she then met and married another man her first husband named Alan. one day someone was at her door bell and when she opened the Door it was the man she had been engaged to it turned out that he had survived and he then gave her his hat as memory. This should have happened During WW2.
The family cant remember the Sailor name what we would like to know if there is any list over who was enlisted on the ship. Cheers/ L

I would recommend researching through The National Archives (TNA) catalogue. You can order documents for a fee online, if you are in the UK it would make more sense to apply for a readers ticket and head down to the archive that way you can view documents for free. I only have experience with 19th century RN records which are more accessible, however the TNA is a good starting point for most research.
WW2 personal service records are held by the MOD and can only be requested by next of kin. I haven't been able to ascertain where the rolls of individual WW2 vessels are, it is possible they are still held by the MOD or perhaps (more hopefully) by the National Museum of the Royal Navy in which case the records will probably be open. The Caird Library also holds a large collection of RN records, however these only really go up to the end of the First World War.

Ships logs can include details of the crew, however that is not their focus or purpose.
