Kenneth B. Pyle: The Making of Modern Japan

Andrew Gordon: A Modern History of Japan

Hilary Conroy et al: Japan Examined: Perspectives on Modern Japanese History (this one is a series of essays on a variety of topics related to Bakumatsu-Shôwa/Post-War)

Bushido: i have a few recs regarding Bushidô because the discourses on the topic of Bushidô in Japan are all relevant to Japan's transition to Meiji

Oleg Benesch: Inventing the Way of the Samurai: Nationalism, Internationalism, and Bushido in Modern Japan, and also his thesis, which is similar to his book, but again worth a look through Bushido: the Creation of a Martial Ethic in Late Meiji Japan

Yamamoto Tsunetomo: Hagakure (this one was written in 1716, so its much before the Bakumatsu period, however it does have relevance in relation to discussion of Bushidô. Take it with a grain of salt, his writings were not 'accepted' until the 1930's and 40's.)
