Was there literal vote buying in the 1800s?

Currently reading about the 1880 US election and they keep talking about vote buying. How did that literally work? They would stop people on the street and say hey here’s two dollars to vote for Hancock for president? What’s to stop someone from taking the money and not doing it?

u/jrrybock asked a similar question yesterday, as it happens. While it deals with a more general topic, I deal with the issue of vote buying in my response here. The means I discuss were probably not the only way of doing it, but this was one way you could go about buying votes.
