The timing of Tenochtitlan is odd. Too much of a coincidence these 2 cities - Venice and Tenochtitlan - were present at around the same time. Tenochtitlan came later though, much later (around 1300s). Also the Mayans were obsessed with Pyramids. In our euro-centric minds we assume they were too primitive to be aware of external cultures or for a few Mayans to have travelled to Europe and Africa. But how do we know for sure? We can't. Maybe the Mayans were culturally appropriating from Africa and Europe. Why not?!
As I've discussed here, the similarities between Maya and Egyptian pyramids start and end with the name of their shape. That both cultures built "pyramids" says more about European explorers' need to relate everything back to what they already knew than about actual similarities.
