Little earlier and not as far west, but The End of the Myth by Greg Grandin talks about a lot of horrible stuff that happened during the westward expansion. It definitely focuses a lot on the idea of a national border and some of the violence that happens at the fringe of the empire, which is a frequent theme for McCarthy.
