How pilgrim-friendly were the medieval Rome/ Mecca/ Jerusalem/ Bodh Gaya? Were there facilities for accommodation, food etc? Were there medieval versions of consulates or diplomatic missions for pilgrims from other nations? Was language a major issue? How welcoming were the locals?

I don't think I can answer all of these questions, but I've worked on some questions in the past that might be helpful, at least for Rome and Jerusalem!

How did medieval travellers perceive Rome as a city?

Was tourism and sightseeing a thing in the past, centuries ago? If yes, how did it go?

What was Crusader ‘Tourism” like? Where the knights and lords who participated ever in much danger, or was it more fixed and showy like much Tourism today?
