Dear Historians. In medieval Europe when they had knights in full armor, why did they use a sword instead of a hammer? I feel like a blunt weapon would be better than a sword.

It states that maces and hammers were used to crush armor, but also that they were easier to parry and read. Plate armor also has weak spots (joints and spaces between the armor, lighter bits of armor) that could be buckled or broken through. Daggers were also used to stab in close quarters between the armor.
