Why did Sparta fall?

by [deleted]

I was reading some texts about how Sparta fell at the hands of Alexander after other city-states in Ancient Greece were conquered by his father, Phillip the second of Macedon. However, I don't understand how this could even be possible. The Spartans were killing machines, their strength most notably displayed at Thermopylae, where 300 of them along with some 700 hundred thespians who ended up destroying some 20,000 Persians. Surely even Alexander the Great couldn't have killed such a war machine!!!
