How Arabs Influenced the Spanish Music in General and the Flamenco Music in particular?

by anasalami18

I'm a usual listener to Spanish and Arabic music, and I always notice some Similarities in the sequence of notes especially sung ones. I've seen also that the etymology of "Olé" comes from Arabic "Allah". What is the history behind the creation of Flamenco and how Andalusian Arabic Music influenced if is it the case ?

So someone commented that the Ottomans had something to do with this. That is completely false.

Parts of Spain, at its height the majoroty of it, was called Al-Andalus between 711-1492, being a settlement of arabs (in Spain called "moros", perhaps moors in English?). Arabic culture and Islam were widespread and the califate of Cordoba was established in 929. Still today, the south of Spain is called Andalucia. An interesting read is this The Formation of Al-Andalus and there are big parts available for free to read.

I am a history teacher, raised in Seville (named Isbiliya in arabic in the 700s). The history of Arabic Spain, and thus flamenco, is unrelated to the Ottomans.

If you want some visuals on the arabic influence on Spanish heritage, the Giralda in Sevilla is a wonderful piece of mixed culture. The bottom part was originally a mosque, but when Sevilla was made Christian again, the yop part and the cathedral sourrounding it were built.

I understand if this post gets removed, since I am on mobile and can't easily provide many sources, but I felt compelled to write this so that OP would bot be misled had they read the now removed comment on the Ottomans. If I have time I will return later this weekend to this thread and give it a more comprehensive overview, unless someone with even more expertise gets to it before me!
