I don't know if this is the best place to post this. I'm Italian and would like to learn more about American history (my boyfriend is American and we're expecting our first child, so I would like to get to know more about their roots and culture). I love history and I love reading so I'm looking for a book that reads easily (not a massive boring tome) and gives insights on all the important events. Also something that is not only focused on white history would be great.
Thanks in advance!
Hello! I recently read and would recommend 'These Truths' by Jill Lepore as an engaging take on United States history that makes a pretty fair effort to incorporate the history and perspectives of minorities (particularly African Americans and women, though indigenous peoples and queer americans as well). It's not without fault or bias, and gets a little heavy on discussion of electoral politics and polling/propaganda in the latter part, but still is fairly solid.
If you're interested in the Americas as a whole, I am also personally a big fan of 1491 and 1493 by Charles Mann.
But more importantly, there's a Very expansive section in the AskHistorians Booklist on the Americas!
