An antisemite I know posted this on his Instagram story. But these numbers don't add up to me. Does anyone know the truth about this?

"At the height of American slavery, 78% of slave owners were ethnic Jews. 40% of the Jewish population were slave owners, while only 0.35% of white Americans owned slaves.

Taking these one at a time:

  1. Jewish people did not own slaves out of proportion to their numbers in the U.S.: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/cp1feo/how_much_validity_is_there_to_the_claims_that/

  2. About 25% of families in the South owned slaves: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/4al3zm/approximately_how_many_americans_owned_at_least/
