I just committed a murder in New York in 1784. There are no police, so who tracks me down, apprehends me, and takes me to court?

You may appreciate a previous answer I provided to the question [Who enforced laws before the police in America?] (https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/h9xi2f/how_were_laws_in_america_enforced_before/) a little while ago. Short answer is the Sheriff, though it may have been a watch crew or even just citizens if they witnessed it.

Happy to answer anything that doesn't cover.
