Why did communism fail in Europe but flourish in China?

To be clear, communism is not flourishing in China since China is not a communist government. In a communist society money, the state, private property (which is not the same as personal property), and class would all be abolished, and the means of production would be in the hands of the worker. Obviously China has not abolished the state or money (and the existence of billionaires really puts a damper on the abolishment of class) and the workers do not own the means of production. If they did, they wouldn’t have had to install suicide nets in their factories. Furthermore, there is a flourishing private sector in China. It currently is responsible for over 60% of the nation’s GDP and 80% of urban employment. All in all, China is not a communist country.
