Short Answers to Simple Questions | July 22, 2020

by AutoModerator

Previous weeks!

Please Be Aware: We expect everyone to read the rules and guidelines of this thread. Mods will remove questions which we deem to be too involved for the theme in place here. We will remove answers which don't include a source. These removals will be without notice. Please follow the rules.

Some questions people have just don't require depth. This thread is a recurring feature intended to provide a space for those simple, straight forward questions that are otherwise unsuited for the format of the subreddit.

Here are the ground rules:

  • Top Level Posts should be questions in their own right.

  • Questions should be clear and specific in the information that they are asking for.

  • Questions which ask about broader concepts may be removed at the discretion of the Mod Team and redirected to post as a standalone question.

  • We realize that in some cases, users may pose questions that they don't realize are more complicated than they think. In these cases, we will suggest reposting as a stand-alone question.

  • Answers MUST be properly sourced to respectable literature. Unlike regular questions in the sub where sources are only required upon request, the lack of a source will result in removal of the answer.

  • Academic secondary sources are prefered. Tertiary sources are acceptable if they are of academic rigor (such as a book from the 'Oxford Companion' series, or a reference work from an academic press).

  • The only rule being relaxed here is with regard to depth, insofar as the anticipated questions are ones which do not require it. All other rules of the subreddit are in force.

A common criticism of George McGovern in the 1972 election seemed to be that McGovern wrote an article in 1971 about how if a country wants to be communist and does so in a democratic manner the US should be ok with that. Does anyone know where I could find McGovern's article?

In WWI, Germany was infamously said to be "chained to a corpse" as Imperial German troops and commanders had to take over more and more of Austria-Hungary's military efforts to keep it in the fight;

• How does this compare to German assistance to Fascist Italy and its other allies in WWII? Was Nazi Germany "chained to a corpse" as well?

• Was there any support in Germany or Austria-Hungary in 'breaking' the Union after Franz Josef's death and bringing in Austria and Bohemia as kingdoms of the German Empire, and Hungary becoming fully independent?

--- obviously not from the Habsburg perspective but if I was an Austrian commander/Noble, by 1916 I'd rather be a subject to the Hohenzollern Kaiser than another damn Habsburg.

Is there any good, general overview book (I don't care how long) that just straight up lays out all the major events in world history?

As a follow up question, is there anything like the above for either the history of Chinese dynasties or Russia?

What I'm really asking is: what is the best way to get a solid foundational grounding in world history?

Is there a place where I can find a basic timeline of human history? Just need it for context when doing specific research for a writing project. Thanks!

Were women allowed to be police officers in Sarajevo before the war broke out? It seems like a simple question, but I've been unable to find evidence confirming or denying the existence of female police officers in transitional Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Can anyone recommend any historical movies (anything set before around 1900) that have exceptionally accurate portrayals of day to day life for people in that time and place, or of what things would really have looked like?

Does anyone know (or where to find) what the date is of the first ostomy surgery performed in different parts of the world? I have a non-academic source that says Britain’s first recorded ostomy surgery was 1815, Germany was 1879, Netherlands as 1909, and Northern America as 1950. (source: https://www.stomaatje.com) But I need to validate these data with academic sources. I found an academic article in the NEJM.org for ostomy surgeries in France, but could not find others.

Who was the greek goddess of women's fertility? So, as far as I know Demeter was the greek goddess of fertility, but that seems almost exclusively associated with agriculture, whereas Aphrodite was the goddess of love but has little association with motherhood and Hera was the goddess of matrimony, and there was a minor goddess of childbirth. So, to whom would an ancient greek woman pray to ask for children?

I'm a history student, reading Caesar's account on the Gallic Wars. Why did so many gallic/germanic/britannic people and places have latin-sounding names? Did the Romans "latinify" preexisting names, or use new ones? Why?

They surely couldnt have given every little river, island etc. they came across a name and Caesar speaks very matter-of-factly about the geography, no mention of "Caesar named this river 'Tamesis'" or something like that.

And they had a lot of hostages who they probably renamed, but Diviciacus for example seemingly was a respected, independent "politician"/diplomat, not a captive. The same goes for some enemies who were never taken prisoner or seen as allies, like Indutiomarus.

Were there any large empires in West Africa during Greek and Roman Antiquity?

Rome had a war with the Nubian Empire of Kush over Roman Egypt and even made expeditions into the continent after battles with the Garimantes. Greece makes mention of Aethiopia, even in Homer's Illiad it's mentioned how the Gods love the Ethiopians. Hanno from Phoenicia sailed along the West African continent but doesn't make mention if there were any civilizations. Though this primarily involves East Africa. Were there any Empires in West Africa at the time of Greek/Roman Antiquity?

Has anyone ever assembled a comprehensive list of all of Henry Kissinger's war crimes and the number of deaths in each? I'm asking because I once heard someone compare his body count to Hitler and while I get that stuff like Vietnam/Cambodia/Indonesia gets him to a few million easily I doubt I can place him in Hitler territory until I've accounted for at minimum ten million deaths attributed to his actions.

I've been looking for the work "Dalmatia in the Age of the War of Crete/Candia" and I cannot find the complete text, only other works that reference it. Does anyone know where I can read or download "Dalmacija u doba kandijskog rata" written in 1958 by Gligor Stanojević? The work doesn't need to be in English, the original Croatian is fine with me. I'm also fine with paying a fee for access to it, I really just don't know where to find the work to begin with.

In 1346 BCE, Akhenaten introduced his new god, Aten, into the Ancient Egyptian pantheon and outlawed all the others. How did the pharaoh make sure the worship was consistent and people didn't secretly worship their old gods? I heard something about workers in Dier el-Madina continuing to worship in secret, yet I can't find anything about it.

I am currently reading Georges Lefebvre's French Revolution. In a lot of early chapters, names and concepts are introduced with little to no context or explanation. When the books were written, was it just expected that everyone reading them would have a complete enough knowledge of 18th century history to know who everyone he talks about was?

I’m looking for a specific event where a small group held off invaders in a mountain pass.

From what I remember of this event, a group of around 30 men stayed at this base in between mountains to fight against invaders that were trying to come through. One man was sent for reinforcements, and when he returned all of the men were dead, but so were most/all of the invaders. I think the men were part of a group colonized by another (probably the British) and the invaders were people who wanted to regain control against the colonizers. If this sounds familiar please lmk, thank you!

How did police (or National Guard or hired goons etc) break strikes in the days of pitched battles with strikers? I'm a little unclear how beating the shit out of a guy with a nightstick can make him go back to work. Or was it to get them out of the way so scabs could work, or what?

ReWatching The Great War series while reading a couple books on WWI has left me a question not yet answered...

What happened to all the prisoners taken? Left in camp? Forced to work farms/factories? Exchanged?

Was there "The Kaiser's Russians"-" The Tzar's Germans" with prisoners recruited to fight?

What about Baltic Germans taken prisoner?

How was alexander the great able to hold his empire while reaching india? After every conquest he must have left a few thousand men behind to garisson the cities. Considering the vast amount of cities spread across Mesopotamia, with populations over the hundreds of thousands, egypt, the levant and anatolia, I feel like it would have been east to rebel against alexanders rule while he was off warring on the edges of the empire.

Hi guys, How can I develop a question similar to Cromwell Hero or Villain further? I think that question is done to death but like the topic. I considered developing it to a likening of him and Hitler as he’s arguably a facist, but I don’t know if that’s got 2500 words in it. Thanks!

Are the New Oxford World History series and Peter N. Stearns' Themes in World History series considered solid sources? I will eventually get through all the reccomended reading on this reddit but these two series cover a lot of themes i'm most interested in and every book is about 100 pages long so I'm thinking they might be a good starting point.

How can I read about the similarities between distant civilizations that have no interaction at all? The topics I want to learn the most about are:

Religious, architectural, socioeconomical (distribution of resources mostly) similarities. I actually want to look at the topic in a biologic way but I first want to learn about the sociologic structures before I move onto their potential biological causes. I figured historians would be one of the best informed academics to ask for books, articles etc. about this. Thank you in advance.

I'm reading the new Erik Larson book, just as fun as his other books, and he mentions that Churchill sent Stalin a telegram that tried to warn him about Barbarossa. Churchill asked the ambassador, Cripps, to hand deliver it b/c it was urgent. For some reason he didn't do it right away. Do we know why? Could he not get in to see Stalin? Did the wording of the telegram make it seem like it wasn't urgent (The book says the telegram was somewhat vague to protect the secret of Bletchley Park)? Did Cripps have a problem with Churchill (Maybe sending Halifax to DC wasn't popular in the foreign servcie?)

What sort of poison would be obtainable in 1960s China? I'm starting a novella that's partially set in this time period, and I'm planning on having one character poison himself. His father is in the Revolutionary Army, so his family is relatively well-off for the time. I was wondering what kind of poison he'd have access to, if any.

Origins of Truman quote (WW2/ atomic bombs)

I have to reference Truman’s quote in a paper i’m doing for school. was wondering if anyone knew when exactly Truman said this and possibly where/in what format e.g. speech, radio transcript etc. thanks :)

“The atom bomb was no great decision. It was merely another powerful weapon in the arsenal of righteousness.”
