Books on the Nanjing Massacre

by legallydaft

Hi, I’m a secondary school student doing a history project. The topic I chose is the Nanjing Massacre and I was wondering if you could recommend any good books on the subject or about the Japanese occupation of Manchuria in general (preferably secondary sources written by historians or primary sources). Thanks

The two books I found most enlightening on the Nanjing Massacre are The Good Man of Nanking by John Rabe and Terror in Minnie Vautrin's Nanking by Minnie Vautrin. Both are primary sources. Rabe was a German businessman who lived through the occupation and Vautrin was the president of a college that became a refugee camp for women and girls.

I've also heard Iris Chang's The Rape of Nanking is very good, but I haven't read it myself and can't speak to the quality of the content. Hope that helps and good luck on your paper!
