His corpse was cremated by the Nazis. The Soviets recovered a dental fragment which was used for identification purposes, and is still held by Russia in archival storage. It was never buried, and likely never will be. Additional charred remains which were also recovered, although there is less certainty to their veracity. These, along with the remains of Eva Braun, the Goebbels family, and Gen. Krebs, were eventually buried under a Soviet Army base in Germany. When the base was to be turned over to the East Germans several decades later, they were unburied in secret, cremated properly, and scattered in a river on orders of the Soviet government.
