Thursday Reading & Recommendations | August 06, 2020

by AutoModerator

Previous weeks!

Thursday Reading and Recommendations is intended as bookish free-for-all, for the discussion and recommendation of all books historical, or tangentially so. Suggested topics include, but are by no means limited to:

  • Asking for book recommendations on specific topics or periods of history

  • Newly published books and articles you're dying to read

  • Recent book releases, old book reviews, reading recommendations, or just talking about what you're reading now

  • Historiographical discussions, debates, and disputes

  • ...And so on!

Regular participants in the Thursday threads should just keep doing what they've been doing; newcomers should take notice that this thread is meant for open discussion of history and books, not just anything you like -- we'll have a thread on Friday for that, as usual.

Not sure if this should be in here or the short question/answer thread.

Where do people usually look for newly released high quality history books? I've found a few places which mention older good quality books, like fivebooks for example but nothing which lists/posts about new/upcoming releases (NYT best seller, and other similar sites appear to be filled with pop-history a lot of the time).

I’m starting my MA in History and got my first reading for my fall classes. Already got the kindle version to read while my physical copy comes in. It’s “Thinking About History” by Sara Maza and I’m just really excited to do my masters.

I'm really interested in post Roman but pre Norman England. I've read the Norman Conquest by Marc Morris but that only touches on the period.

About 2 months ago I asked about books on Southeast Asia b4 1600 AD, and got no responses.

I looked up some books, here is what I found. Not sure of quality of the books tho.

Bellwood & Glover, Southeast Asia from Prehistory to History

Junker, Raiding, Trading, and Feasting: Political Economy of Philippine Chiefdoms

Miskic & Yian, Ancient Southeast Asia

Shaffer, Maritime Southeast Asia to 1500

Tarling, Cambridge History of Southeast Asia, Vol 1, Part 1

Additionally, Open Research Project at Australian National University has digitalized and made free pdf of old books.

https://openresearch-repository.anu.edu.au/…/2/b11055005.pdf (Indianized States of Southeast Asia)

A historiographically significant work in Southeast Asian history, although the idea of Indianization is outdated.

I would be highly appreciative on book recommendations for understanding Mexico's current culture and political climate. I left the country when I was young but now that I'm older, I am extremely out of touch and want to understand what's going on in my home country.

Are Isabel Wilkersons books considered differently by historians than they are by general book reviewers? Her books look interesting but I’m wary because her lack of background in history.

Im interested in finding an in depth book on manorialism, particularly on how the fief was run, who live on it, what they did, and how it was self sufficient.

What do you folks think of Khan Academy's Intro to US history? I wanted to do some light learning for now and dive in properly later.
