What are the best books for an overview of Soviet history, particularly from the perspective of an average Soviet citizen?

I would recommend you seek out Everyday Stalinism: Ordinary Life in Extraordinary Times: Soviet Russia in the 1930s by Sheila Fitzpatrick. It is narrow in focus on its time-frame, obviously, but sounds like it is just what you are looking for, looking at ordinary life in the USSR during the 1930s , and touching on a wide array of topics that relate to "the perspective of an average Soviet citizen". Definitely check it out.

I would very much recommend Orlando Figes. He has written multiple books about lives in Russia from a "bottom down perspective". In particular, his 2012 book "Just Send Me word" is a collection of love letters and diary entries between a Moscow couple, separated due to the Nazi invasion. Orlando figes then uses additional information to create a marvelous story connecting the letters. Not only is it a very entertaining read, from a historical perspective it's interesting to see how the decisions of the leaders at the time, affected citizen's day to day.
