How did an ancient civilization communicate with another whose language they didn't know?

When two civilizations with no common language discovered each other, how did they communicate?

Great question.

I read a book on Roanoke recently that touched on other early settlements in the New World. It said one of the ways they communicated easily was that one Native American had been kidnapped years earlier and brought to Europe, then made his way back to the New World and Native culture. So he was the de facto translator. But they didn’t touch on that initial meeting that happened before it.

It bothered me that they were so detailed about this, but didn’t provide the reason the initial meeting included communication.

I hope someone with real knowledge answers.
