by scorpiomoonx

Hi all, Does anyone know of any books on how gender was viewed in Pre-Columbian Mexico or any other Latin American country?

Thank you!!!

Susan Kellogg has a useful overview on women entitled Weaving the Past: A History of Latin America's Indigenous Women from the Prehispanic Period to the Present. Rosemary Joyce wrote Gender and Power in Prehispanic Mesoamerica. Pete Sigal has books on sexuality and gender, one focused on the Maya and the other on the Nahua. He also has numerous articles on sexual practices. Maybe also check out books by Traci Arden on the Classic Maya: Ancient Maya Women and Social Identities in the Classic Maya Northern Lowlands: Gender, Age, Memory, and Place. Camilla Townsend's Malintzin’s Choices: An Indian Woman in the Conquest of Mexico has a chapter or two about women in the Gulf Coast region. Lisa Sousa's The Woman Who Turned into a Jaguar won a book prize last year, but it might be a little too colonial for what you're looking for. The work cited sections in these books will point you towards even more sources if you need them.
