Looking for a book on the ethics of East Asia (mainly China, Korea and Japan) as well as it's similarities and differences compared to traditional European ethics and morals from a historical perspective

by russischerrabauke

I hope this post is not deemed to be against the rules and if so I would like to apologize in advance.

As the title says I am looking for a book that gives a broad explanation of East Asian morals as well as a comparison to European thinking in this area. I was hoping someone could recommend a book that is neither to focused on one or two particular aspects and therefore lacks a broad perspective, nor overgeneralizes and simplifies these complex issues too much.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated

Thank you

So, this question is very broad and the requirements you set out for your book are kind of difficult to pin down in one or two books; however, I would recommend starting with Confucianism and Mahayana Buddhism as both have very defined moral codes and play a huge role in morality and ethics for China, Korea and Japan. Overarching histories of East Asian thought or even broad historical sources will be helpful to you as they generally do at least give primers. You're going to need those primers before any comparative literature as otherwise you're not going to be able to really take in the comparisons at a core level.

Once you get your basics down with broad studies of Confucianism I recommend looking into sources specifically about Neo-Confucianism for the Korean and Japanese contexts in particular.

In terms of good starter books. I recommend Sources of East Asian Tradition, Vol. 1: Premodern Asia (Introduction to Asian Civilizations) obviously it will have a lot of stuff you don't need, but you're going to need a base before you can really get into comparative ethics.

Korean Korean is hybrid of northern tungus hunter called ye-maek (濊貊) and ancient korean penisula's people called han(韓). And some refugee group from chinese ,japanese ,persia, arab, vietnam, khitan, mongol, manchurian, especially in goguryeo dynasty and balhae dynasty they rule nomad (manchurian, khitan, shi wei....) Lot of northern people get into korean penisula. So korean is hybrid of north and south asian(70:30)

Japan Japanese is hybrid of ancient korean and ancient japanese. In stone age~bronze age lot of korean and chinese get into japan. They are similar with us. But they get more south characteristic(like quit big eye and little height) And in modern time they get relation with europian like dutch. And their a lot of marrage with europian I think it quit affect to modern japanese.

China Actually china is can not define easily brcause they get enormous empire Chinese is quit different each other

But i'll generalize

Their northern people are the hybrid of Southern people(漢) and northern people(khitan,korean,mongolian,altaic...)

And middle part is related with middle asian nomad

And southern part has lot of relate with southern asian
