The shortest answer is that Columbus was looking for a shorter route to SE Asia. This entire region was called India by the Spanish. When Columbus landed in the Caribbean he thought he was in India and called the natives Indians. Over the years, despite knowing the mistake, the name incorrectly continues to be used.
