It seems awfully progressive for people back then to knowingly elect a disabled president, so I started wondering. Was it something he kept secret? And if so, to what extent? Was it something only other world leaders knew, or the American public? Citizens of other countries? And lastly, was it something used against him during elections, like the slander ads of today? Basically, I’m wondering how much his disability affected public perception of him during his own lifetime.
