Is there no historical precedent for gender dysphoria?

by [deleted]

I recently found a blog post which claims that if transgender teens truly felt such intense dysphoria that they were at risk of suicide, there would be a massive of historical writing about this "medical emergency," starting with Greece and the Roman Empire even if medical procedures were not tried. They cite a lack of medical interventions for these supposed transgender children and lack of writing about them being at risk of suicide as proof that it is a modern phenomenon.

They then use this claim to further the point that trans people worrying about the mental health of transgender children who aren't allowed to transition are making a mountain out of a molehill. Needless to say, I was suspicious of the idea being pushed that absence of evidence is evidence of absence, especially since it makes a large deal of assumptions about how ancient societies should or would have acted. So just how true is this? Are there no examples in history of children experiencing extreme dysphoria as proposed here?
