I know getting a degree is a large part of it and I admire it. I just don't have the money to and would like to work in this field doing what I can.
Hello museum worker here!I would highly recommend volunteering with a local museum, archives, historical or archaeology societies, if you have the free time. These organizations are almost always looking for volunteers to help with caring for objects and assisting with projects.
Depending on the institution this can mean helping curators document collection objects, scanning archival papers, giving tours and helping with educational programing just to name a few things. If you are more interested in archaeology, look at joining your local and regional archaeology organizations. These groups (if you are in the US) are usually associated with the American Institute of Archaeology (AIA) and will host guest lecturers and can provide information on local excavations which could have volunteer opportunities!
Local universities usually have a few field schools over the summer and will take usually take on a few volunteers. If you have the extra cash you could even looking into an over-seas archaeological field school or preservation studies.
All these opportunities might give you the chance to learn more history, particularly things that you are interested in and if you decide to pursue a degree you will have the practical skills and experience and a better idea of what degree or field would be best suited for you!
Hope this helps!
