What is the best book to read about Weimar-Germany?

by Wheream_I

Pretty basic question, I know, but I’m looking for a 100-200 (this isn’t a hard limit) that discusses the historical fact of Weimar Germany.

The reason for this ask is because I want to understand the conditions that led to the rise of Hitler and why the citizenry would support the Nazi party. In my opinion an important aspect of opposing Nazi-similar movements is to understand what led to the original Nazi movement in a historical context.

It's not by a trained historian(the author was a journalist by trade) and focuses on Weimar Berlin rather than Germany as a whole but I highly recommend Before The Deluge by Otto Friedrich. It was one of my school books for my undergrad degree(I graduated in December so I know it's not outdated.) Friedrich covers everything from German art to the political structure to the education system.

I'm a fan of the Weimar Sourcebook. Using firsthand sources is, to me, a great way to immerse yourself in the culture of the era and the Sourcebook gives plenty of options to see what was going on through the decade, how things changed, but you can also pick and choose and move around. At least I always find it fascinating to see Weimar first hand (or as first hand as possible) while also knowing how quickly that society was about to change.
